Barcelona: Pedri’s terrible streak continues

Pedri’s 2023 ends on the sidelines with another quadriceps injury.

It has become a sad tradition for Barcelona. For their home match against Almería and the last game of 2023, the Catalan club had to do without their young and valuable midfielder Pedri. Injured in his quadriceps, the 21-year-old is ending his year on the sidelines. And since he arrived in Catalonia from Las Palmas in the 2020-2021 season, he has spent almost as much time with doctors as on the pitch.

A 7th quadriceps injury

In the last three seasons, he has already suffered six quadriceps injuries, making this his seventh in the same area. In total, he has so far missed 69 matches in all competitions due to injuries. If we exclude the 2020-2021 season, his first, where he was spared injuries, he has missed no less than 41% of his team’s and Spain’s matches, as Spanish journalist Adrià Albets recalls. This is enough to raise serious questions about his recurring physical problems just a few months before the Euro in Germany.

Pedri is one of the most talented young players in the world, but his injury record is a major concern. He is a key player for both Barcelona and Spain, and his absences have been a major blow to both teams.

It is unclear what is causing Pedri’s recurring quadriceps injuries. Some have suggested that it may be due to his playing style, which is characterized by his high intensity and constant running. Others have suggested that it may be due to a muscular imbalance, which could be caused by a lack of strength training.

Whatever the cause, it is clear that Pedri needs to find a way to stay healthy if he wants to reach his full potential.
