Ballon d'Or: Brazilian legend backs Vinicius Jr for the crown

2002 World Champion, Brazilian football icon Rivaldo believes Vinicius Jr (23), of Real Madrid, has what it takes to be a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or.

Like many young South American players who arrived in Europe at a tender age, Vinicius Jr faced a tough adjustment period after joining Real Madrid. It was a challenging time, but the Brazilian managed to navigate through it with hard work and the support of his teammates. Now counted among the world’s best players, he’s become a symbol of the new Madrid generation and a key player in their La Liga triumph this season.

But his brilliance isn’t limited to the domestic scene. In the Champions League too, the 23-year-old forward has proven to the world that he’s at the level required for a prestigious club like Real Madrid. With 5 goals and 5 assists in 8 games during this campaign, he led his team to the semi-finals and still harbours hopes of clinching his second major trophy.

Rivaldo Tips Vinicius Jr for Ballon d’Or Glory

These standout performances haven’t gone unnoticed, especially not by Rivaldo (52). The Brazilian legend, who won the 1999 Ballon d’Or and the 2002 World Cup, believes his compatriot is among the frontrunners for the iconic prize presented by France Football.

“He has been one of the key players for his team this season, showing a lot of hunger. The team has adapted to his style of play, and he’s an excellent candidate to win the Ballon d’Or if Real Madrid secures the Champions League. He’s already among the top three players globally without winning any major titles,” stated the 2003 European Champion in an interview with Betfair. “Now, if Madrid beats Bayern next week and clinches the Champions League, Vini has a great chance of being the standout player of the season.”
